What is Abstract Thinking? According to many, abstract thinking is a level of thinking that is removed from the facts of the “here and now”, and from specific examples of the ideas or concepts being thought of. Abstract ideas are often complex and subjective. Most importantly, they are ‘invisible’. Abstract ideas are formulated, not concrete. But how is this type of thinking important in the workplace?
When an employee can perform a specific task while keeping up with what is going on around them, they are able to focus on the task while still engaging with their environment. Abstract thinking is highly beneficial when thinking outside the box; this is a positive quality for a new hire to have. Using abstract thinking along with the ability to think in a concrete manner creates the ideal work environment; ideas flow and productivity is consistent.
Pre-employment testing can determine whether a new hire has the ability to think in an abstract manner by looking for those specific qualities. When you focus on specific qualities such as concrete or abstract thinking in your candidate search, you have a higher success rate of building a team that can work with you to help your business grow.
